Space Operations Squadron members help unearth bombs Released: Jun 1, 1998 by Airman 1st Class Elaine S. Tarello 750th Space Group Public Affairs ONIZUKA AIR STATION, Calif. (AFNS) -- When the Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., Explosive Ordnance Disposal team arrived at New Boston Air Station, N.H., they suspected they might find a bomb. They were, however, somewhat surprised to find four. During a scheduled subsurface ordnance clearance operation recently at New Boston, host to the 750th Space Group's 23rd Space Operations Squadron, the Patrick EOD team found four World War II-vintage 250-pound bombs, and also unearthed 12 practice bombs and 362 pieces of 2.25 rockets. "New Boston used to be a bombing range during the war and up until the mid-1950s," said Tech. Sgt. Richard D. Mackin, New Boston fire chief. "The area eventually evolved into a camping area." In fact, out of the 2,800 acres of New Boston, only 100 acres are operationally used. The remaining 2,700 acres of land are earmarked a camping, fishing and hunting area for Department of Defense employees. "We had to have the land cleared before we could officially declare it a campground," said Mackin. "So, we called in the EOD team to declare the land clear of ordnance up to four feet deep." The team is responsible for all Air Force Space Command assets east of the Mississippi River, according to Master Sgt. Gary M. Howden, Patrick's EOD superintendent. The team searched the area with MK-26 ordnance detectors, which are able to search up to 20 feet underground. One by one, they dug up the four bombs. Unable to determine whether the bombs were inert from the casings, the EOD team's only choice was to detonate them. "Bombs from this era all had the same casings," said Howden. "These days, practice bombs are easier to identify because of their color coating and markings." After alerting the surrounding community, the EOD team detonated the bombs with C-4 brought in from Otis Air National Guard Base, Mass. They discovered the inert bombs were used only for training. With detonation complete and the land declared clear, the EOD team cleared the campgrounds to six feet, and even up to 10 feet in some areas. After two weeks of locating and disposing of literally hundreds of buried devices, the EOD team headed home. "Everyone involved was thrilled with Patrick's EOD team," said Mackin. "They suffered through intense heat and vicious black flies without a complaint. They were true professionals." (Courtesy of Air Force Space Command News Service) |
